The new BC curriculum is great because it gives so much freedom for teachers to teach their students the way that they would like. The idea of core competencies across the curriculum, curricular comptencies for specific subjects is a useful way to explain to parents what students are learning without resorting to merely following a textbook. That said, the content section can be a great starting point when deciding what kind of units you might want to approach. To be honest I’m a little bit torn about the Emerging-Developing-Proficient-Extending scale. To some extent I think it may help students and parents develop a growth mindset, however I am concerned that many may look past this aspect and merely view it as a 4 point scale. Anecdotally my neices, who are in grades 7 and 9, say that getting an emerging grade “totally sucks”.
