Weytk-p! Hello Everyone! My name is Kalon Vincent and I was born in at St. Pauls Hospital in downtown Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The name Kalon comes from the greek, kalos meaning the beautiful, but also the bringer of light. I think it is a great name for me because it ties in nicely with one part of my philosophy of education. As teachers we shine a light on various things so that our students can dispell the dark clouds of ingorance surrounding that topic. In time, our students will become torch-bearers in their own right, moving throughout the world they inhabit and clearing away misconceptions and prejudices.
I hold a degree in Journalism, History, and Creative Writing from Concordia University in Montreal. This was my first experience with intercultural and interlinguistic learning. The second major formative experience would occur in 2011 when I got my TESL certification, hopped on a plane, and flew to Japan to try teaching English.
To say this was a major learning period for me would be an understatement. Navigating the vastly different language, culture, and mores of a place as foreign to Canada as Japan taught me a lot about myself and how I can be of use to people and the world. In short, I fell in love with teaching. I will never forget the feeling of walking into a room filled with little people and having them follow intently my every vocalization and guesture, their eyes shining bright as they absorbed everything I had to give them that day.
In 2021 my sister gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and just like that my focus flipped back to where I had come from. I enrolled in the Bachelor of Education Program at TRU and began another journey, inwards and back to the land where I was born.
